Elizabeth Cabraser is a founding partner of Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, a plaintiffs’ litigation firm with offices in San Francisco, New York, Nashville, and Munich.
Possessing unparalleled expertise in complex civil litigation, Elizabeth has served as court-appointed lead, co-lead, or class counsel in scores of federal multi-district and state coordinated proceedings. These cases include multi-state Tobacco litigation for Attorneys General, cities and counties, and addicted smokers,, the Exxon Valdez disaster, Breast Implants, Fen-Phen (Diet Drugs), Vioxx, Toyota Sudden Acceleration, the Volkswagen “Clean Diesel” and Fiat Chrysler Ecodiesel Emissions MDLs, numerous securities/investment fraud cases, and Holocaust litigation. Today, Elizabeth serves in court-appointed leadership positions in several of the nation’s highest profile civil cases, including serving as a Co-Lead Counsel in the Camp Lejeune Water Litigation.
In January 2018, Ms. Cabraser was appointed to the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee and Settlement Negotiating Committee in the National Prescription Opiates MDL, and serves as Plaintiffs’ Lead Counsel in the McKinsey & Co. National Prescription Opiate MDL, cases in which the public nuisance doctrine has been utilized to achieve trial victories and nationwide settlements on behalf of U.S. states, cities, counties, and Indian Tribes against the manufacturers, distributors, and dispensers of prescription opioids.
Ms. Cabraser has been repeatedly recognized as one of the foremost litigators in the U.S., and was selected an unprecedented four times as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America by the National Law Journal, which has called her “a pillar of the plaintiffs’ bar.” She is a perennial advocate for the improvement of the quality of civil justice through the inclusion of women, younger attorneys, and lawyers of color to leadership positions in class action and mass tort cases.
She received her J.D. and undergraduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.She writes extensively on class action and complex litigation topics, and teaches Aggregate Litigation and Multidistrict Litigation as a lecturer at Yale and Berkeley Law Schools. From 2010-2017, Ms. Cabraser served on the Federal Civil rules Advisory Committee, including its projects culminating in the 2018 amendments to the Rules for class action notice and class settlements, She currently serves on the Standing Committee, overseeing all Federal Rules Committees.
