EDWARD M. MORGAN, BA, LLB (Toronto), LLM (Harvard), was appointed a judge
of the Ontario Superior Court in Toronto in June 2012. He has authored numerous
judicial opinions in civil, criminal, and constitutional matters, has presided over complex
trials both with jury and sitting as judge alone, and has case managed, adjudicated, and
mediated many leading and significant class actions. Since 2018 he has been one of a
small number of designated class action judges for the Superior Court in Toronto,
presiding over notable cases in securities and investors’ claims, competition actions,
products liability, health care matters, employment claims, systemic discrimination
actions. and privacy rights. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was a Professor of
Law at the University of Toronto and taught in the fields of civil procedure, constitutional
law, private international law, and public international law (1998-2012). Before joining
the University of Toronto he practiced civil litigation at Davies, Ward & Beck (as it then
was), first as an associate (1989-1992) and then as a partner (1992-1997). In 19984-85 he
was a law clerk to Madam Justice Bertha Wilson of the Supreme Court of Canada. He is
the author of numerous law journal articles, case comments, and two books: International
Law and the Canadian Courts (Carswell, 1990) and The Aesthetics of International Law
(U. of T. Press, 2007).
