Mariana Tavares is Counsel at Antas da Cunha ECIJA in Lisbon, where she is part of the EU & Competition Law team. With a global practice spanning the EU, Lusophone Africa, Brazil, China, and Saudi Arabia, she advises boards and in-house counsel on competition risks in complex transactions and class action litigation.

She previously served as référendaire at the Court of Justice of the EU and held senior roles at the Portuguese Competition Authority. As a United Nations international consultant, she was based in Brazil as legal adviser to CADE and led technical cooperation efforts with the governments and regulators of Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Timor-Leste in developing and implementing competition regimes.

She has chaired working groups within the ECN and ICN, and contributed to initiatives by the OECD, UNCTAD, BRICS, and the EU-China Trade Project.

Mariana holds a PhD from King’s College London, an LL.M. from Duke University, and a D.E.S. from Université Libre de Bruxelles.

She co-authored the book The Law and Politics of Global Competition, published by Oxford University Press (2022).
