Mat is a professional antitrust economist with 35 years of experience. Who’s Who Legal 2023 ranks Mat as an economist Thought Leader and describes Mat as “a super smart competition economist“, who “is gifted with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas“, and “Mat is really client focused and responsive“.

Prior to joining AlixPartners, Mat was chief economist in the competition department at Ashurst LLP. He started his career as an economist at the UK Office of Fair Trading.

In addition, Mat has also spoken and written more generally on economic analysis under UK and EC competition law, including competition law pleadings, pharma pay for delay, competition damages, the UK collective action regime, standalone competition law actions, the assessment of rebates post Intel/Qualcomm, the implications of big data in insurance markets, and the effects of unilateral price announcements.

Mat has also written widely on the subject of UK/EC merger control, including in the International Comparative Guide to Merger Control (including matters such as the trends in merger control, the CMA’s use of pricing pressure tests in Asda/Sainsbury, mergers in dynamic markets, the failing firm defence, and merger efficiencies). He is also a co-author of ‘UK Merger Control Law and Practice’ (3rd edition).
